Parking Machine Scam Alert

A growing scam is targeting drivers using contactless payment at parking machines, according to the UK's national fraud reporting centre, Action Fraud.

How the Scam Works

Fraudsters attach hidden skimming devices to contactless readers. When you attempt to pay, the machine may show a “card declined” message. While you walk away to try another machine, the device has already captured your card details.

Spotting a Tampered Machine

  • Check for extra stickers or attachments  Look closely at the contactless area. Any added item or sticker could be a skimmer.

  • Verify official branding  Scammers often use mismatched or fake logos to disguise their devices.

  • Trust your instincts  If something looks odd, loose, or bolted on, don’t use the machine.

Contactless readers should appear seamlessly integrated into the machine. If anything seems out of place, it’s safer to pay by cash or use a trusted parking app.

Stay alert and protect your payment details — a quick check could save you from fraud.
